OVERVIEW

Launched in 1982 simultaneously in Cape Town and Johannesburg by the Italian Motorcycle Owners Club (IMOC), the Toy Run™ is now the largest motorcycling-related charity event in Southern Africa and arguably the world. A Toy Run™ is held in over nineteen centres in the Southern African region, hosted by local motorcycle clubs and other organisations, with the invaluable assistance of the commercial sector.

More than an estimated 65,000 motorcyclists turned out across the region with toys of all descriptions adorning their bikes, to make the holidays a little brighter for disadvantaged children of all races in orphanages, shelters, homes and hospitals throughout the country’s communities. The aims of the Toy Run are to improve and enhance the image of motorcyclists and to collect and distribute toys and gifts to less privileged children up to 18 years.

2009 saw the Cape Town event grow yet again with more than 27000 toys being collected by Cape Town alone, and distributed to children via more than 225 organisations throughout the Cape and South Africa. See the Report Back

The Cape Town Toy Run® attracts upwards of 15000 motorcycle enthusiasts and approximately another 5000 general public visitors over the duration of the 6-hour event, held the last Sunday of November annually. It is also aligned to the Toy Run® National Forum and has access to a national network, distributing relevant information region-wide.

The Cape Town event has achieved iconic status with the City of Cape Town and enjoys extensive media coverage prior to and during the event. Email info@toyrun.co.za for information or sponsorship opportunities

Entertainer Kurt Schoonraad has confirmed his participation in this years Toy Run® for which we thank him. Throughout the afternoon there will be stage activities to keep you entertained. Spot prizes will also awarded for various categories – anyone can walk away with a prize. This is an event intended to thank the motorcyclists for DONATING TOYS. The event ends at 4pm.

ADVERTISING & SPONSORSHIP

Toy Run™ provides significant sponsorship opportunities and should any corporate or organisation wish to become a sponsor, please email us for the sponsorship package opportunities. Pick 'n Pay has once again generously arranged for thousands of flyers and posters to be printed for distribution by motorcycle clubs, dealers, various shops and businesses catering to motorcyclists and interested individuals. If you know anyone who rides a bike - make sure he gets a flyer. Flyers and posters are available from any member of the Toy Run® Trust or IMOC.

Report Back 2009

Another Toy Run® has come and gone for the year, the 26th anniversary since a handful of bikers gathered in both Cape Town and Johannesburg all those years ago, to show their communities that motorcyclists have heart, as well as courage.

This goodwill “ride” has grown into an incredible motorcycling phenomenon that has to be seen and experienced to be believed. The event has become known, far beyond the motorcycling world, as one of Southern Africa's most significant charity initiatives. It's an awesome motorcycle procession and the biggest biker gathering of the year.

The organisation of the IMOC Cape Town Charity Toy Run Trust event is spearheaded by a group of eight Trustees, led by ex-traffic officer Rodney Ford, whose name has become synonymous, over his 17 years of chairmanship, with both the Cape Town Toy Run, and now the National Toy Run Forum. The Annual National Toy Run Forum, which was held in 2009 in Cape Town and in Limpopo Province in 2010, is an informal group of the Toy Run organisers nationwide (and Namibia), who have collectively agreed to follow the Code of Ethics established by the Toy Run trademark holders, to prevent any unscrupulous use of this amazing charity event and to be able to encourage countrywide corporate sponsorship.

The eight Trustees of the Cape Town event, along with a further group of more than 150 volunteers, ensure that this incredible event, which takes place over a mere 6-hour period on the last Sunday in November, runs smoothly. These tireless workers ensure that the 20 000-plus visitors, motorcyclists and public alike, that move through the end venue during the course of the day, are kept fed, ‘watered’ and entertained, as thanks and in return for their contribution of the toys.

In 2006, approximately 17000 toys were collected on the day and redistributed to the some 200 charity organisations, orphanages, shelters, homes and hospitals. The 2009 event saw an incredible growth to more than 27000 toys, some 60% increase in the number of toys redistributed to the children in need since 2006. The organisers hope to continue to break these records and already have begun brainstorming their ideas in order to make the 2010 event even more spectacular. The organisers would also like to thank the many wonderful sponsors (too many to name, but credited on our website) for their continued support. Special mention must be given, however, to the City of Cape Town Mayor’s Office and to Kurt Schoonraad who have been particularly supportive of this wonderful event.

Sadly, on a personal note, the writer also noticed that there were a number of people who arrived and entered the event grounds without ANY toys at all!! Perhaps in 2010 your fellow, more generous, motorcyclists will remind you that this is for the children and that the whole event at the end venue is a thank-you for your toy donation.

A few very important facts:

  • No toys are RESOLD by the Toy Run – these are all GIVEN away.

  • All toys are distributed in the year that they are collected (ie none are stored).

  • None of the organisers, nor any of the volunteers are paid for their efforts.
